1998 Magdelaine, St-Emilion

SKU #992203 95 points John Gilman

Outer quote mark The 1998 Château Magdelaine is a brilliant young wine and it seems very likely, at this early point in its development, that this vintage will ultimately rank as one of the greatest ever produced at this iconic estate. The bouquet is deep, pure and very elegant in profile, wafting from the glass in a nascently complex blend of black cherries, cassis, menthol, cigar smoke, Magdelaine’s inimitably complex soil tones and a touch of smoky new oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and rock solid at the core, with impeccable balance, fine-grained tannins, lovely acids and great purity and inherent elegance on the long and vibrant finish. This is still very early days for this great wine, but it will be magical at its apogee. (Drink between 2021-2060) 95+ points Inner quote mark (6/2016)

Outer quote mark Very deep ruby-red with the barest hint of amber at the rim. Rich, deep, utterly captivating aromas of black cherry, red plum and cocoa, complicated by a hint of vanilla and a lovely spicy calcaire freshness. Very dense, rich and lush on the palate, with spicy raspberry, graphite, white pepper and mineral flavors displaying palate-staining intensity and amazing precision. A huge wine for Magdelaine, with a silky mouthfeel and mineral and pepper notes lingering on the finish for minutes. One sip and you understand what a wine of remarkable breed and elegance is all about. The 1998 Magdelaine is also an archetypical example of the greatness merlot can achieve on limestone soils. Though it's hard to resist now, this wine will continue to drink perfectly at least until 2025. The 1998 vintage was another one with a large crop. September was an unsettled month, but most estates on the Right Bank enjoyed ten key rain-free days to harvest their merlot. The rain started up again later in the month as the cabernet sauvignon harvest was beginning, and this is one of the reasons why 1998 is widely considered a Right Bank year. Outer quote mark Undoubtedly the finest effort from Magdelaine in many years, the deep saturated ruby-colored 1998 offers up concentrated, jammy black cherry as well as subtle vanilla aromas. On the palate, it is full-bodied, opulent, and ripe, with outstanding concentration, purity, and moderate tannin in the finish. This Merlot-based St.-Emilion displays considerable intensity and structure. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2020. (RP) Inner quote mark (4/2001)

Outer quote mark Plum and sweet tobacco aromas that turn to blueberry. Full-bodied, with silky tannins and a long, caressing finish. Solid core of sweet, ripe fruit, with an exotic raspberry character. A beautiful wine since the beginning. (JS, Web-2009) Inner quote mark
