1997 Poujeaux, Moulis

SKU #990512 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark Undoubtedly a sleeper of the vintage, and probably the finest 1997 cru bourgeois, Poujeaux's 1997 exhibits a dense purple color as well as a sweet nose of black fruits complemented by toasty oak and loamy soil scents. Textured, layered, and rich, with low acidity and an excellent ripe finish, it can be drunk now and over the next 10-15 years. Bravo! Inner quote mark (4/2000)

Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar

Outer quote mark Healthy bright ruby color. Perfumed, somewhat exotic aromas of black cherry, roasted nuts and bitter chocolate. Sweet and supple in the mouth, with ripe flavors and gentle texture. Flavors range from chocolate to mint. Finishes with ripe tannins and good length. Very successful for the vintage. Inner quote mark (5/1999)

Wine Spectator

Outer quote mark Beautiful aromas of berries, currants and cherries, with a hint of vanilla. Medium- to full-bodied, with delicious berry and cherry flavors. Long, long finish. Inner quote mark (1/2000)

K&L Notes

Save the 1996 and drink this beauty now. Pain grillé aromas and ripe, fruity flavors. Fine balance and round tannins. This is mouth-wateringly good and elegance personified. You'll want to buy this by the case! A sleeper of the vintage--the finest 1997 cru bourgeois around.

This ’97 didn’t require three hours of decanting, but it really did become more expressive over the evening. A couple of K&Lers have started buying this wine every couple weeks for dinner. Cranberry and red cherry on the nose. The palate still has plenty of mouthwatering acidity with more cranberry, along with underlying damp earth and mushrooms. Still plenty of wine to hold up against a steak dinner and elegant enough for a roasted chicken.
