Probably the best wine from a good, ripe though rather variable vintage: still deep at the centre with a thin tawny rim; lovely ripe plummy aromas, open but still brooding with more to reveal; ripe and fleshy on the palate with glorious plum and cherry fruit backed by firm ripe tannins leading to a powerful finish. Graham is another great port house, producing one of the deepest-colored and sweetest styles of vintage port. Along with Taylor and Fonseca, Graham has probably been the most consistent producer of great port in the post- World War II era. Their tawnys are quite good rather than exceptional, but their vintage ports are truly sublime and sumptuous. Graham is the undisputed star and kingpin of the 1985 vintage ports. Yes, it is made in a sweeter style than the other ports, but it is a fabulous wine because of a dazzling level of black-cherry fruit, an enormous structure, and staggering depth, dimension, and length. Dark color, with intense aromas of blackberry, licorice and hints of flowers. Full-bodied, lightly sweet, with super-refined tannins. Long and caressing. Very youthful. Will improve for a long time. This is really excellent. Always has been. Just starting to come around. (JS)

Bright, glowing crimson. Dense and broad and luscious. Peppery finish. Not as sweet as some Graham's, and with more concentration than Graham's 1980. Polished, long and rich. Big and round. (JR) 18/20 points

K&L Notes
Graham's is a prominent Port house in the Douro Valley of northern Portugal. It was begun as a textile company in the early 1800s by brothers William and John Graham in Glasgow, who received a barrel of Port as payment for a debt. The business grew from there. Today, Graham's is owned by the Symington family who own several other port houses, including Dow's and Warre's.
