Outer quote mark In complete contrast to the sweet fruited, easy drinking 1999 Clos des Papes was the masculine and slightly austere 1995 Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Crau. This is still young and fresh with a blackberry, leather, licorice, river rock and hot tar scented bouquet and a concentrated, medium bodied palate. In the southern Rhone, look for spicy, full-bodied wines that are blends of Grenache, Syrah, and other varietals coming from appellations such as Chateauneuf du Pape, Gigondas, or Rasteau. Wines labeled as Cote du Rhone or Cotes du Rhone Village (a cut above generic Cotes du Rhone) are frequently found here in the US because they often represent some of the best values on the market.
