1986 Léoville-Poyferré, St-Julien

SKU #951270 94 points Decanter

Outer quote mark Didier Cuvelier had taken over in 1979 and was undertaking a huge replanting programme, so the 1980s at this estate were a time of serious change that slowly but surely came through in the wines. At this point in time the consultant was still Emile Peynaud - Michel Rolland didn't arrive until 1994. It has sweet plum fruits with some hedgerow and bramble notes through the mid-palate, leading to a eucalyptus finish. Fermented and aged in 50% new oak, with malo in barrel - Poyferré was pretty much the first château in the Médoc to do this. (JA) Inner quote mark (5/2019)

Jancis Robinson

Outer quote mark Delicately aromatic. Silky, fresh, fine and gentle. Reserved and elegant. Lovely, and beautifully balanced with a kick of spice at the very end. 17+/20 points. (JH) Inner quote mark (5/2009)

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark One of the more developed of the Medoc’s 1986s, this dark plum/ruby-colored wine is already showing some pink at its rim. The wine shows medium body, some dusty, gritty tannins, yet a sweet, spicy, plummy nose with black currants, minerals, and underbrush. (RP) Inner quote mark (1/2003)

K&L Notes

92 points Neal Martin: "A very deep garnet core – much more youthful and opaque compared to the previous vintage. The nose is far more introverted than the ’85 with tobacco, graphite and tar. It seems to be coiled up, demanding a few more years before it unfurls its aromas. After ten minutes in glass, it begins to reveal an attractive minty aroma, greater freshness and precision. The palate is full-bodied, much more tannic and a little drier than the ’85. On the surface, the previous vintage is more appealing but this has more depth and structure with a grainy-textured, savoury finish. It does not have the breeding of Las-Cases across the road, yet it is still a great Poyferre to enjoy over the next decade. Drink now-2025 Tasted March 2008."
