 Garnet red. Knockout nose offers expressive scents of raspberry, strawberry, blood orange, cedar and faded violet. Then juicy and bright on the palate, with flavors of ripe red berries, underbrush and tobacco lifted by harmonious acidity. This impeccably balanced wine finishes extremely persistent, with a velvety, refined mouth feel, but I expected to find more density and precision.  Magnum served blind initially alongside Monte Bello 1971. Wonderfully sweet, round and florally aromatic with a beautifully smooth texture. A brilliant wine, even if not a blockbuster, and one that I was given blind by owner Jacques Hébrard when I visited the château while researching The Great Wine Book in 1981. I'm delighted to be able to add a tasting note on it to our database - even if it is arguably more enthusiastic than explicatory. Still going strong. 20/20  (1/2017)

94 points Neal Martin's Wine Journal: "Tasted at Christies’/Linden Wilkie’s 1971 dinner. The second encounter with this wine this year, which I will not complain about. The bouquet it has a slightly more savory, ferrous note o the nose, backed up by wild strawberry and cranberry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied and very elegant with hints of clove and sage inflecting the ripe succulent red-berried fruits that lend it its velvety veneer. Still a precocious little thing, soft and sensual on the finish, the Merlot speaking louder than the Cabernet Franc. Lovely. Tasted April 2011."

It is the most planted variety in Bordeaux, and it has also become an extremely fashionable red in many regions including California. Although it has a reputation to be smooth, and easy to drink when young, Merlot is also capable of producing extremely intense wines as well. It is often used as a blending agent with Cabernet Sauvignon.
