1989 Branaire-Ducru, St-Julien

SKU #950773 91 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar

Outer quote mark Earthy nuances complicate ripe red fruit aromas on the rather woodsy nose. Then fresh and clean on the palate, with a very juicy quality to the ripe red fruit, truffle and scorched earth flavors. Not the most complex or longest Branaire-Ducru ever made, but very nicely balanced and drinking splendidly right now. (ID) Inner quote mark (3/2014)

Outer quote mark The bouquet is quite attractive, wafting from the glass in a mix of black cherries, cigar ash, chocolate, dark soil tones, a nice touch of chipotle pepper and smoky new oak. On the palate the wine is full-bodied and moderately complex, with respectable depth at the core, melted tannins and good balance and grip on the slightly shorter finish. This is a very drinkable and enjoyable wine today, with still a couple of decades of life ahead of it, but it is not in the top division in the commune in 1989. Inner quote mark (3/2019)

Outer quote mark The 1989 Branaire-Ducru appears youthful, not unlike the 1982 served alongside. There is plenty of perfumed blackberry, black olive and burnt toast scents, with time potent undergrowth aromas join the chorus line. The palate is medium-bodied with mellow tannin, rounded in the mouth thanks to the slightly lower acidity. (NM) Inner quote mark (3/2020)
