1976 Pichon-Lalande, Pauillac

SKU #950495 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark Lacking the concentration and character of the best years, this wine is, nevertheless, highly successful for the vintage. The color is medium ruby, with some brown and amber at the edges. A gentle, suave, interesting, mature bouquet, and soft, round, curranty flavors have provided pleasure since the late seventies. Yet the wine refuses to fade. Still at its peak....Last tasted, 2/88. (Bordeaux Book, 1998) Inner quote mark (1/1998)

Wine Spectator

Outer quote mark Holding on very well for a '76, and delicious to boot. Brick-ruby in color, with rose petal and plum aromas and flavors, a hint of mushroom. Medium body, smooth texture.--Pichon-Lalande vertical. Inner quote mark (11/1997)

K&L Notes

From Neal Martin's Wine Journal: "Served blind at the Pichon-Lalande vertical, this has a deep garnet core with slight ageing on the rim. It has a lovely nose: cedar, tomato vine, a touch of black coffee -- certainly expressive with secondary aromas. There is a slight fishy accent just in the background. The palate is medium-bodied, soft entry, quite fleshy, the Merlot stronger than I expected with savoury/meaty notes coming through, with hints of green pepper and cedar towards the finish. Nice length, very approachable and lots of personality. It is not going to improve as the finish is a little dry. This is very good for the vintage, but drink now. Tasted December 2008."
