1988 Beychevelle, St-Julien

SKU #950324 90 points John Gilman

The 1988 Beychevelle shows a decidedly “cooler” vintage profile than either the 1990 or the 1989, but the quality here is also outstanding. The nose is quite black fruity in its mix of cassis, dark berries, tobacco leaf, gravelly soil tones, a touch of tariness and cigar ash. On the palate the wine is deep, fullish and rock solid at the core, with superb focus and balance, nascent complexity, moderate tannins and a long, refined and bright finish. While this is beginning to drink well now at age twenty-three, more generosity on the palate will clearly come with further bottle age. A strong example of this underrated vintage. Drink between 2011-2040. (6/2011)

90 points Wine Spectator

One of the best bottles from Beychevelle in a long time. Full-bodied, with silky tannins and aromas of raspberry and mint with a hint of violet. Lead pencil and fruit appear on the long aftertaste. (JS) (11/1998)

Decanter

Nice fruit and depth. A lovely palate with fine fruit quality and depth - very fine. (3/1997)

K&L Notes

John Gilman calls Beychevelle the "hidden gem" of Saint-Julien.
