1982 Pavie, St-Emilion

SKU #950244 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark This fully mature 1982 displays a weedy, herbaceous character interwoven with notions of earth, fruitcake, cherry jam, and spice box. Representative of the old style Pavies, it is moderately endowed, with ripe tannin, but not a great deal of concentration. (RP) Inner quote mark (6/2009)

Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar

Outer quote mark Good saturated full red. Exotic nose combines roasted raspberry, minerals and coffee; slight suggestions of old wine. Then sweet and minerally in the mouth, with nicely firm-edged fruit and good flavor delineation. Finish shows a slight dry edge and a hint of greenness. Best today in the middle palate. (ST) Inner quote mark (8/2002)

Wine Spectator

Outer quote mark Youthful ruby color, with a garnet edge. Floral and perfumed, with a berry undertone on the nose. Medium-bodied, with fine tannins and a pretty, straightforward fruit aftertaste. (JS) Inner quote mark (11/1998)

K&L Notes

This excellent St-Emilion is a testament to the talent and dedication of Jean-Paul Valette, the owner and maker of the 1982 Pavie. Most recently in the critics' notes, Neal Martin encountered this somewhat old school Pavie while at Wine Advocate: "Here, the Pavie 1982 has a 'strict' bouquet that is almost Left Bank in personality: earthy, leathery with graphite notes with touches of cedar and pine infusing the broody black fruit. The palate is very conservative and foursquare with dry tannins, whilst the finish is muffled and attenuated. It’s not a bad wine by any means and I would happily drink a bottle. But it is patently a different wine from the one produced nowadays. Tasted November 2012." (Wine Journal, 1/2013)
