4 stars Michael Broadbent (July 1999): "A dozen notes. Predictably closed but with depth and potential. Flesh and texture then noticeable. Three recent notes, deep but with a surprising amber-coloured rim. Good drink though (Christie's boardroom lunch 1994); the most interesting, though I say it myself, at a very vinous dinner party at home alongside Portugal's greatest red, Barca Velha, also of the '78 vintage. They had quite a bit in common but again I noticed that the Montrose had this orange mature rim - reminded me of a baboon's bottom [sic]. Very good. At or a little past its best, finishing very dry."
