 What makes the 1992 California Cabernet Sauvignon vintage so incredible is that one of its hallmarks is the voluptuous, opulent, and succulent nature of the fruit. In Dunn's offerings, that translates into wines that are massive and rich, but with sweeter, more expansive, chewy mid-palates. Both of these Cabernets are 20-30 year wines, but I suspect the softer Napa cuvee will be drinkable in 5-7 years. (RP)  (10/1995)

 The 1992 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain is simply stunning. Wow. The fruit is so vibrant, alive and expressive. A wine of extraordinary harmony, the 1992 flows across the palate with voluptuous fruit. Silky tannins give the 1992 a measure of textural finesse that is compelling. Rose petals, sweet red berries and flowers build to a deep, resonant finish that is striking for its purity and beauty. I have also had the 1992 Napa Valley Cabernet recently, confirming this is a great Dunn vintage all around. Readers holding the 1992 are in for a real treat. (AG)  (2/2014)

 Bright, deep red with ruby tones! Knockout nose combines black raspberry, dark plum, tobacco, leather, minerals, mocha, leather and earth, all lifted a floral quality. Plush, dense and wonderfully alive, conveying noteworthy fruit sweetness; reminded me of a superb mature Saint-Julien wine, which is to say that it still boasts terrific grip. This exciting, impeccably balanced wine possesses a remarkable structure for continued evolution in bottle. The palate-staining berry, leather and mineral flavors blow by the serious but harmonious tannins. An incredible showing for this vintage: perfect today but built for a long life in bottle. Cabernet Sauvignon and Blends

- Cabernet Sauvignon has come a long way from its role as a blending varietal, however dominant, in the wines of Bordeaux. Today it is the most planted red varietal in the world. Identified as a descendent of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, the late-ripening Cabernet Sauvignon needs to be planted in warmer climates to fully ripen. Its small berries can easily be identified for their distinctive blue color, thick skins and high tannins. And while the varietal has its own definitive characteristics: green pepper-like aromas and black currant flavors among them, it is perhaps most prized for its ability to convey terroir, vintage and winemaking. A relatively new varietal, Cabernet Sauvignon started making inroads into the wines of the M├ędoc and Graves in the late-18th century. Today it is also dominant in the up-and-coming Entre-Deux-Mers region of Bordeaux and can also be found in Southwest France. It is the companion varietal to Sangiovese in Italy's Super Tuscans and is planted all over Europe, stretching to lesser-known winegrowing regions like Russia and Lebanon. In the Americas Cabernet Sauvignon has found champions in every nook and cranny of California and among winemakers in Washington, where it complements plantings of Merlot. In South America, Cab thrives in Chile, but can also be found in smaller amounts in Argentina and even in Mexico.
