For 40 years Clos du Val has been making wines according to their own code. These days they call it Vindependence, but when John Portet, Clos du Val co-founder, picked the Napa Valley in 1972, it was just called making good wine from good grapes. Clos du Val released its first wine in 1974, and the winery's 1972 Cab was among the six California Cabs featured in the Judgement of Paris tasting. Portet has earned the reputation for making some of the most long-lived wines from the Napa Valley, and this 1980 is drinkable proof.
