1983 Spottswoode Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

SKU #900295 90 points Connoisseurs Guide

Outer quote mark This one is fully mature and has interest mainly as a reminder of past glories, but, it is in those complex, layered elements that one finds the glory of which older Cabernet Sauvignon is capable. Scents of mint, black cherries, vanilla, cedar and dry soils set the pace and, if the palate is less alive with fruit, it is equally endowed with interesting facets and nuances. *One Star* Inner quote mark (4/2007)

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark Production was slightly larger in 1983, which was also 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. Unlike the first vintage that was made at Hafner Winery, this was made at Robert Pepi. It wasn’t until 1999 that the winery was completed and all wines after that were produced and bottled at the estate. The 1983 shows a dense garnet color, notes of licorice, underbrush, a hint of charcoal and earth, slightly more rustic, but light tannin, medium-bodied, chunky and somewhat monolithic. Drink through 2026. (RP) Inner quote mark (8/2016)

Outer quote mark Good full red. Currant, spices, flowers, cigar box and leather on the nose, along with a faint weedy quality. Juicy, spicy and slightly green; rather lean but still full of life. (ST) Inner quote mark (6/2016)

K&L Notes

Many wine critics have compared Spottswoode's Cabernet to Chateau Margaux. Spottswoode makes an elegant, delicately perfumed almost understated wine that is infinitely feminine. It is also one of the longest-lived California Cabernets we know of.
