1982 Beaulieu Vineyard "Georges de Latour Private Reserve" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

SKU #900149 92 points John Gilman

Outer quote mark This was served from magnum, where it is still deep, vibrant and very fine. The bouquet is deep, complex and classically Georges de Latour in its beautiful blend of red and black cherries, chocolate, a touch of coconutty oak, gentle cigar smoke and Rutherford dust in the upper register. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, deep and quite suave on the attack, with a fine core of fruit, gentle tannins, excellent focus and lovely length and grip on the pure, plush and refined finish. This is probably the last great classic vintage of the Georges de Latour bottling, and at least in magnum, it is drinking very well indeed and has plenty of life still ahead of it. Inner quote mark (3/2009)

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark One of the finest examples of the 1982 vintage, this wine has been a reliable performer for over a decade. It is one of only two B.V. Private Reserves made during the decade of the eighties to merit an outstanding rating. The 1982 exhibits a saturated dark ruby color with only slight lightening at the edge. The nose offers copious quantities of sweet, jammy, red and black fruits intertwined with plenty of spicy, toasty new oak. Ripe, full-bodied, opulent, and fleshy, this sumptuously-styled Private Reserve is drinking well. (RP) Inner quote mark (6/1995)

90 points Vinous

Outer quote mark Good medium red. Aromas of black cherry, menthol, cedar, tobacco and peppery herbs. Juicy, dry and penetrating, conveying a dried-fruit quality and noteworthy intensity to its savory flavors of cherry, berries, tobacco and cedar. A touch of sweetness is countered by a strong spine of acidity, which ultimately gives the wine a somewhat clenched character. Finishes with substantial dusty tannins and building dryness. (ST) Inner quote mark (4/2019)

K&L Notes

In 1900, when Georges de Latour decided to buy a small, four-acre property in the town of Rutherford as a surprise for his wife he, perhaps unwittingly, purchased a piece of Napa Valley history. Under the direction of André Tchelistcheff, the winery would fast become one of California's preeminent producers.
