Isle of Jura 10 Year Old Single Malt Whisky (750ml)

SKU #620095 92 points Wine Enthusiast

Outer quote mark The distillery's newest bottling is rich and slightly smoky. Time in former Bourbon and oloroso Sherry barrels means that lip-smacking hazelnut, brown sugar and cocoa take center stage, finishing with dry hints of leather, chamomile and clove. (KN) Inner quote mark (12/2017)

Outer quote mark Despite close proximity to Islay, stylistically Jura make has far more in common with its Highland cousins. The entry level 10 year old variant offers resin, oil, cereal, and pine notes on the delicate nose. Comparatively light bodied, with malt and drying saltiness in the mouth, along with a hint of aniseed. The finish is malty and nutty, with more salt, plus just a wisp of smoke. K&L Notes

Jura is a small island off the west coast of Scotland, just north and east of Islay. It is only 28 miles long and 7 1/2 miles wide. There are only 180 people who populate the island. The Isle of Jura distillery is on the east coast of the island, in the southern region. It is known for its soft water and sea air, which shows in the whisky. As Mr. Tait mentioned when he was here, they are known as the "Highland Malt on the Island." The 10 year old is a very elegant malt. It is aged in white oak and some bourbon casks. The nose is like walking through a field of wheat in summer, with hints of toffee. On the palate it is very delicate, clean with a nice oiliness that coats your mouth (Mr. Tait says that this is due to the stills, which are very tall and very bulbous). A delightful way to introduce yourself to the vast variety of island malts!

Elegant and delicate smoke is at the backdrop of the curtain of gorgeous sherry. The smoothness and ease with which I enjoy this malt says it all to me. I drink a lot of Laphroaig, but this is my go to when I want my smoke and sherry fix simultaneously. Enjoy this scotch neat, next to a fire and loved ones is ideal...you just feel more baller.
