Lagavulin 16 Year Old Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml) (Elsewhere $100)

SKU #620021 90-95 points Wine Enthusiast

Outer quote mark Soy sauce, olive brine, peat, honey, oloroso Sherry, brewer’s yeast, bread dough, barley malt and cigar smoke in the bouquet. The flavor that magically includes the innate intense peatiness of Islay malts and the masterly employment of oak barrels phase defines 'classy Islay.' Concludes sweetly, without sacrificing the tangy, astringent peatiness that is inherent. Gorgeous. *Best Buy* Inner quote mark (6/2006)

93 points Whisky Advocate

Outer quote mark This has been Lagavulin’s principal expression for more than 30 years. Iodine, rich peat, and caramel on the early nose, with sherry, sea salt, and charcuterie. The oily, briny palate offers peat and a medicinal note, along with black tea, Seville orange, toffee, cinnamon, and a hint of smoked fish. Peat embers and hot tar in the lengthy, spicy finish. Deeply satisfying! (GS, Spring 2020) Inner quote mark

Wine Spectator

Outer quote mark A fascinating turn on an essentially peaty Islay. The smoke offers a toasty element as it coyly introduces itself on the nose, with hard candy as a partner. The peat comes on with salt spray in the mouth, but once again gets quite candy sweet, with a bread dough core. On the finish the smoke fairly disappears for a while as you enjoy the delicate sweetness, masking the next wave of toast at the outer limits. (JB, OD) Inner quote mark (2/2011)

K&L Notes

Lagavulin was established in 1830 and has the driest start of all single malts. Full amber in color, with a dominant sherry nose. Full-bodied yet smooth. The dryness is offset by the sweetness of the sherry character. Salty notes, and a huge, powerful, peaty finish. A connoisseur's malt, and with consistently high marks from late critic Michael Jackson.

Lagavulin is a pillar. Without a doubt one of the most important distilleries in Scotland. It is the darling of Diageo and cranks out ultra high quality smoky malt year after year. Even though some cranky critics like to lament about how the 16 year doesn't taste like it used to, I've had it along side bottlings from the last 3 decades and I have to say it continues to be one of the most special whiskies on the market. Quality, intensity of flavor, and depth are unsurpassed at this price point (and our price is pretty seriously low). The Lagavulin is an oily beast, rich and peaty, but with a profound balance that keeps you itching to get the glass back up to your lips.

Earthy, smoky, ashy, and underneath it all, sweet and chewy. I waited nearly a month and a half after opening the Lagavulin 16 to review it; I figured it would reveal itself over time, that this lion would lamb out a bit. Well. I agree that it is defiantly smoky (as Dave Broom says), like a hearth, with some caramel candy and smoked meats like, say, the Talisker 10 (aka the Precious...in my regard) on the tongue. Nosing is hot and spicy, and the finish is like hot smoke. Richer, with less thin, iodine character than some Islay single malts--maybe a hint of singed seaweed. A serious Islay at a whacky good price.

For my palate I'm not sure this single malt can be bested around its price point. It carries heavy smoke without being overpowering - and the complexity on the finish begs to know why you would spend more on lesser scotches. A first love for many scotch drinkers, but don't be surprised if you keep coming back to this bottle after you explore the multitude of offerings on the market around this price-point.
