1996 Bodegas Reyes "Teofilo Reyes" Ribera Del Duero

SKU #270077 94 points Wine Enthusiast

Dark cherry aromas and beautifully integrated oak with attractive mint-menthol notes grace the complex nose. The flavors are very complex as well, with tart cherry, licorice, balsamic, prune and cocoa notes dancing on the palate. Big in scale but very well balanced, with a long dry finish and firm but not sharp tannins. Truly excellent. (8/2000)

Full red-ruby. Explosive aromas of raspberry, cherry, dark chocolate and spicy, charred oak. Thick, dense and sweet, with penetrating, deep flavor. Wonderful combination of sweetness and vinosity. Really expands in the mouth and suffuses the palate. Finishes with very fine, palate-saturating tannins and terrific persistence. In comparison to this wine, the '97 is more dominated by its wood element. A very fresh, impressively structured wine that's developing slowly. Showing spectacularly today-even better than a bottle I sampled not long after the bottling last spring. (11/1999)

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The wine boasts an opaque purple color, followed by exquisite blackberry liqueur notes intermixed with smoke, licorice, and new oak scents. It displays a brilliantly focused, ripe, concentrated style with full body, gobs of fruit, a viscous, creamy texture, and a lusty finish with beautifully integrated acidity and tannin. (RP) (10/1998)

K&L Notes

Made by one of the most legendary winemakers in the region, Teofilo Reyes, who was the winemaker at Pesquera winery between 1974 and 1993. This is the third year the he has made wine under his own label, and the 1994 and 1995 were both enormously successful. Great concentration and richness.

Additional Information:

- A very important red grape varietal that's native to Northern Spain, grown across the north and central regions of the country. Low in acid and alcohol, with subtle strawberry, leather and tobacco notes, the grape responds well to oak aging and plays particularly well with others. Tempranillo is an important component, when combined with Garnacha, Mazuelo, Viura and Graciano, of Rioja, with the best examples coming for the cooler, higher-elevation regions like Rioja Alta and Rioja Alavesa. It is also grown in significant quantities in the Ribera del Duero where it is called Tinto Fino and Penèdes where it is called Ull de Llebre o Ojo de Llebre. Tempranillo hasn't gained a particularly strong foothold outside of Spain, achieving some success under the name Tinto Roriz in Portugal. There it is used as a component of Port and in the table wines of the Ribera del Duero and the Dão.

- With more land under vine than any other country in the world, Spain is the great sleeping wine giant. In recent years, a great deal of money and passion has been poured in the burgeoning Spanish wine industry, helping to improve quality among its vast array of wines from sparkling Cava to Sherry to Rioja Gran Reserva. The most important red-wine-producing regions are Rioja, Ribera del Duero and Navarra in the north and Priorat and Penedes in the northeast.
