2009 Blagden "Monte Rosso Vineyard" Moon Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon (Elsewhere $80)

SKU #1740345

A tiny 200 case production from a single block of Cabernet Sauvignon at Monte Rosso Vineyard. The block is planted to a heritage field selection "clone" of Cabernet Sauvignon thought to be unique to Monte Rosso, grafted onto 110R drought-resistent rootstock that is well suited to the intensly rocky, red volcanic soils. The wine is matured for 21 months in 50% new French oak.

This single vineyard bottling showcases pretty notes of black plums, ripe blueberries, ripe figs, tobacco leaf, clove, and menthol. Quite lifted on the palate, with ample acidity that persists to the juicy, spicy finish. At a sweet spot, showing complexity, and development from the bottle age. Another great value coming out of Sonoma. Cheers!

One of the most common questions I field in Redwood City is, "Where's your section of aged California Cab?" Aside from the occasional old and rare gem, most of which require you to open your wallet wider than many are comfortable with, well aged domestic Cab just doesn't come by like it does for Bordeaux. In that way, this 2009 Blagden "Monte Rosso Vineyard" Cabernet Sauvignon is a bit of an enigma. 15 years of age, massale-selection vines, and a top quality vineyard designation, all for $40? Oh, yes. And the kicker: the wine is absolutely stunning. Cigar box, cedar, and leather intermingle with redcurrant and red plum skin on the nose, and the wine continues to open and expand with more and more air. The palate is equally fresh and spicy, with red plum and incense, cedar and currant, spicebox and leather all coming together in harmony. This isn't big, concentrated, ultra-modern Napa. This is a wine that harkens back to the golden age of California wine, and to those wineries who prioritize balance and ageability. So open a bottle, grill up a steak, and enjoy.

We have a unique and astounding offer for you today, a perfectly aged Cabernet from one of the most famed and historic vineyards in California, the great Monte Rosso Vineyard. First established in the 1880s this vineyard on the west facing slopes of the Mayacamas Mountains has long been known as the source of some of the most powerful, age worthy and distinctive wines in the region. The soils here that give the vineyard its name are volcanic in nature, a mixture of fractured volcanic rock, huge boulders, and iron rich red loam. The vines toil in these rugged mountain soils and produce dramatically concentrated and flavorful wines. Blagden is a small boutique winery that sources a few tons of Cabernet from an old heritage clone block at Monte Rosso. The vines are massale field selections of a historic clone of Cabernet considered unique to this ancient vineyard, perfectly suited to the red rocky soils and mountain terroir. The wine has a definite "old school" lean to it coming in at just 13.5% ABV. Not a big, jamy fruit bomb, rather this wine has tones of classic redcurrant, plum, leather, cedar, ferrous minerality and crushed rock. It's in a perfect spot where the primary fruit is nicely matched with some bottle aged qualities and secondary aromas and flavors. The well documented tannins of this site have been tamed over the years leaving behind an wine perfectly suited to a rack of lamb or standing rib roast. At 15 years of age this wine is in a prime spot for drinking over the next 5 or so years. Folks who enjoy more classically styled California Cabs (think Heitz, Spring Mountain, Laurel Glen, Togni etc) should definitely check out this wine ASAP. We took every case we could to negotiate this remarkable 50+% off Insider's Advantage deal, but when only 200cs were crafted in the first place it's always going to be a limited time offer. Such a treat to be able to buy perfectly aged Cabernet, from an iconic vineyard, with winery direct provenance and at a super sharp price! Enjoy folks!
