Founded in 1859, they have always been one of the classic historic producers in the region. Over the decades they have expanded their holdings to include vineyards over many of the southern Rhone's village and cru appellations, including a few prime sites in the Northern Rhone. The Lou Camine is from their Lirac holdings (a cru that sits just across the river from Chateauneuf) and is typically a blend of Grenache with smaller amounts of Syrah, Mourvedre and Cinsault. All grapes are destemmed and fermented in large vats. No oak treatment is used on this cuvee preserving the wine's freshness and accessibility.

Finding a great every day wine is my favorite kind of treasure hunt. It means tasting lots of wines and when you find one you want to spread the word. Old World wine producers like France, Italy, and Spain are brimming with fantastic wine gems that are sub-$10 steals. The Ogier Lou Camine from the Rhone Valley's Lirac appellation fits the description. A classic Grenache based Rhone blend, it bursts with ripe juicy red fruit, dried pressed flowers, garrigue, herbs and spices. Believe the hype on this historic producer's Lirac wine and buy by the case!

Not much I have to say about this wine except what a steal! Delicious flavors of red plums, kirsch, red apple skin, raspberries, savory dried spices, potting soil, hint of black tea, and a touch of smoked meat. Well balanced, vibrant acidity, pleasant mouthfeel, and a nice spicy finish. Cheers!

Ogier in the southern Rhone is a reliably good producer that makes excellent well priced value wines that have a classic regional character. The "Lou Camine" Lirac came across my desk recently and I was intrigued. I tasted the wine and it was developing nicely. The wine is filled with aromas of savory spices, touches of garrigue, meaty nuances, and is just beginning to show a little leather around the edges. It was the nice core of succulent sweet black fruit in the mid-palate that really caught my attention. At $20, this is a solid value for fans of the Lirac style. But, Ogier was in the process of changing importers and the new importer approached me with an exciting price. For sure, it would have been a good deal at that price, but we countered with an insane price and here we are! This is juicy, friendly everyday wine that truly drinks well beyond its price point. This is not just a case buy, this is a CASES BUY!
