2018 Guadagni Family Wines "1906 Block" Dry Creek Valley Zinfandel (Elsewhere $40)

SKU #1722507

The Guadagni (Gwa-don-knee) Family first settled in Dry Creek Valley in the 1870s. The oldest vines on the ranch, still producing beautiful fruit to this day, were planted in 1906. Much of the rest of the ranch was planted in the 1940s and 1950s. This now fourth generation farming family have become renowned across the region for the quality of their old vine fruit. Iconic Zinfandel producer Ridge Vineyards has long produced a single vineyard designate wine for its mailing list from Guadagni Vineyard. Russian River stalwart Dehlinger even made very rare Zinfandel bottling from Guadagni fruit simply because Tom Dehlinger was so enamored by the quality of the fruit. This is a truly historic site with top notch pedigree. Unfortunately, though the family have been producing their own estate wines since the 1970s, with fourth generation Bill Guadagni crafting the wines, selling wine in the modern, ultra-competitive, and increasingly crowded marketplace, isn't so easy. I was presented their wines at deeply discounted pricing and one quick taste through this line up of stunning Zins had me making them an offer for every case they had across multiple vintages. The wines are simply fantastic. Stunningly pure, rich, flavorful old vine Zins that can stand shoulder to shoulder to wines from Ridge, Turley, Bedrock, Carlisle and any other winery that produces classic Zinfandel across California. What's more, our winery-direct pricing is incredible, making these wines super affordable.

Raffaelo Guadagni has been farming the same property where Guadagni Family Wines stand since late 1800, and today the winery is still run and operated by the same family, with Bill Guadagni as the winemaker. The wine showcases deep nose of dark plums, black figs, ripe blackberries, espresso, hint of black olive, dried spices, and nutmeg. On the palate, spicy, with fresh notes of blackberries, raspberries, boysenberries, currant, smoke, and mocha.

This represents one of the most astounding Zinfandel deals I've come across in many years. When I tasted the whole line up of Guadagni (Gwa-don-knee) Zins I was seriously impressed with quality and purity of these classically styled wines. There are very few indicators more convincing that an old Zinfandel vineyard is of the highest quality than when Ridge Vineyards bottles a single vineyard designate of the wine for their club members and mailing list. Ridge (and other notable wineries such as Dehlinger) have bought fruit from the Gaudagni Family for decades. These ancient, 112 year-old vines are testament to the ongoing excellence of this vineyard site and the four generations that have farmed them. The wine itself is a classic expression of old vine Zin. Not shy with bold, decadent fruit, spiced raspberry, boysenberry, brambly elements, baking spice. There are also some old Petite Sirah vines interplanted with the Zin that give a density and earthiness to the wine to counterbalance the lush, ripe fruit with pepper, smoked meat and dusty gravel. Mouth filling and rich, with wonderful purity and polish. A total pleasure to drink and an incredible value amongst its peers thanks to our deeply discounted Insider's Advantage, winery-direct pricing. This is one not to be missed by fans of the varietal, or to be honest, anyone who likes a bold, fruit-driven red that is hugely satisfying and eminently drinkable over the next 3-5 years maybe more.
