2017 Tobias Glen Vineyard "Jinsei" Russian River Valley Pinot Noir (Elsewhere $75)

SKU #1697418 94 points Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark Pale to medium ruby, the 2017 Pinot Noir JINSEI Tobias Glen Vineyard opens slowly to warm black cherries, cranberries, woodsmoke, bergamot, dried flowers and a touch of tobacco and graphite. Medium-bodied, it’s wonderfully concentrated and savory, with meaty touches intertwined with the dark, ripe fruits, juicy, grainy and finishing long with lots of nuance. This has an appealing deeper, darker character than the rest of the lineup. California Winery & Vineyards is a new and very small project made by consulting winemaker Stéphane Vivier. Outer quote mark With an opening note of rose petal, this is a cool-climate styled wine, crisp and focused in texture and tension. Cherry cordial, wild strawberry, forest floor and black tea all figure into the silky, supple mix, finishing with a tease of power. (VB) Inner quote mark (12/2020)

A fascinating wine from a great vineyard just outside Forestville in the outer reaches of the Russian River Valley. Tobias Glen was a longtime vineyard designate for the iconic Merry Edwards so that should tell you something about the quality of this site! Now factor in that this wine is made by Stephane Vivier of Hyde de Villaine (HDV) and his own eponymous label Vivier. That's some serious pedigree packed into a relatively inexpensive bottle of wine! The 2017 Jinsei (meaning "life") shows off the terroir of this site. It has bright red berry fruits, spiced cherry, pomegranate, and brambly notes that I often find so readily in Russian River Pinot Noir. But it also has a forest floor, earthy, sous bois-like savory component that is more typical of cooler west Sonoma coast. As a 2017 vintage you can also pick up a little secondary complexity hits of iron, leather, and truffle from bottle conditioning. It's really in a nice spot for drinking and has lots of depth beyond just primary fruit. A modest alcohol level and good natural acidity mean this bottle is very well suited for the dinner table. We worked with the winery to get a great price on this boutique production wine; I hope you enjoy it!

Fruits for this Pinot Noir comes from the estate vineyard "Tobias Glen" within Russian River Valley, and was crafted by Stéphane Vivier, a Burgundy native who is behind Vivier Wines. Fresh nose of plums, red cherries, dragonfruit, pomegranate, clove, cinnamon, and hint of cola. Light, airy on the palate, plenty of refreshing acidity, with delicious notes of crunchy red fruits, baking spices, and savory dried herbs on the spicy finish. "Jinsei" meaning "life" in Japanese is a great name for this wine, as it kept it's freshness, and youth even after six years in the bottle.
