The wonderful old distillery in Trewlawny was once one of the true great rum distillers. Founded in 1753, it was one of the surviving sugar estates and remains one of the most traditional distillers on the island. Owned by a complex partnership called National Rums of Jamaica, a joint venture between the Jamaican government, Maison Ferrand (via Goddard Enterprises Ltd/W.I.R.D.), Demerara Distillers Limited and Diageo. In 2012, the distillery was forced to shut down due to a tank leakage and didn't become operational again until 2015. This rum is one of their old recipes known as Vale Royal Wedderburn. It was adopted from the Vale Royal distillery which closed in 1950s. A pot stilled rum that clocks in at a reasonable 172 g/HLAA, it would have been fermented from a blend of molasses, dunder and cane juice for about a week back in 2009. Aged tropically for 8 years and transferred to ex-cognac casks in France for an additional 4 years. Finally it was finished in Spanish orange wine casks for an additonal 7 months. The total dissolved volatilves is a whopping 866 g/HLAA. Bottled without the addition of sugar or coloring (150a) at an exceptionally delicious 106 proof. Tasting notes from bottler, "Nose: Intense...orange, overripe banana, cooked pear, berries, custard, beeswax and coconut oil with hints of musk, also floral and herbal funk. Palate: Dry and quite funky with varnish, tropical fruits, green apple, grape...nutmeg, cinnamon and tonka bean...brioche and chocolate."

This exquisite cask should win over most any connoisseur of aged spirits, particularly those who enjoy well-crafted Cognac. I highly recommend letting this air out, as much of the latex/paraffin character will dissipate quickly. The Wedderburn style means a somewhat restrained aromatic profile, but what lies underneath is a bombshell. Crackling brown sugar and bright candied citrus make strong first impressions, and there is an unmistakable air of Cognac about it. The texture is rich and sumptuous, with a velvety mouthfeel once again reminiscent of fine French brandy. The brilliant citrus from the nose is joined now by ripe mango, papaya, stewed plum and figgy pudding. The depth of flavor here makes it seem older the 12 years, but without the hard edge of wood tannin that can come with extended barrel aging. Truly a masterpiece of cask finishing, and easily one of the most compelling spirits in-store right now. Don't let the low proof fool you; this bottle is worth every penny.
