2021 Aurore Dezat Sancerre Rouge

SKU #1694793

The wines of Aurore Dezat are a regular feature in our wine club offerings, and her vibrant Sancerre is an easy favorite among K&L staff as well. Aurore makes wine on her family estate in Sury-en-Vaux, which was established by her grandfather. Before Aurore took over the estate, most of the fruit was sold off through négociants. She has slowly phased out the négociant contracts. The estate is home to more than just vines, with grain crops and farm animals also finding a home there, but for Aurore, the focus is on the wine. She farms organically and emphasizes the importance of the three soil types present on the estate. With her grapes growing on limestone, flint (or silex), and clay, Aurore can produce wines that have a real depth of character.

We historically have turned our attention to Burgundy when seeking out great drinking Pinot Noir from France. It has gotten harder and harder to find those entry level wines that over deliver for the money though. I would like to direct your gaze over to Sancerre. Historically, this cool climate region has produced Pinot Noir over calcareous soils. Much of it was used for rose production, but in the last decade or so, the quality and consistency has dramatically improved and the reds have become downright delicious. Aurore Dezat and her partner David Girard, have really pushed forward on their pinots, making some supple and fruit filled wines that are reminiscent of the cooler pinots you might have found in Marsannay, Fixin and Mercurey... but at half the price! The rouge is perfumed and spicy, showing the more delicate nature of the 2021 vintage. It has aromas of raspberry, white pepper, rose petals and incense. All done in tank, this is a user friendly style that can you keep you squarely in French style Pinot for a much more reasonable price.

This extremely pleasurable red Sancerre has sour cherry candy fruit, sweet baking spice (cinnamon), clean minerals and nice acidity. With a little time in the glass, it becomes more full and rewards with darker cherry and a nice semi-rich texture. A real pleasure and a bargain, as well!

Pinot noir from Sancerre is often overlooked, but it offers great value for those who seek it. If you're looking for a wine that is fresh and complex, this is the one for you. Try a bottle and experience the vibrant notes of pomegranate and cherry, with a layer of minerality and acidity that elevates the wine to the level of a regional Bourgogne contender!
