2018 Château de Montfaucon "Baron Louis" Lirac

SKU #1694747 92 points Decanter

Outer quote mark There’s a touch of pepper and juniper here, it’s full-bodied, very savoury style. The tannins are just-ripe and it’s well balanced with a long finish—there's tension and power here rather than concentration of fruit, and it will take a while to really reveal itself. This will be one of the longer-lasting Liracs of the vintage. (MW) Inner quote mark (9/2019)

K&L Notes

An 88-acre estate, Château de Montfaucon sits just across the Rhône River from the esteemed vineyards of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. It is owned and operated by Rodolphe de Pins, a U.C. Davis graduate and former member of the winemaking staff at Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe. Over the years, Château de Montfaucon has developed a HUGE following among both our staff and customers. Who is the Baron Louis? A seminal figure in the history of Montfaucon, he was responsible for restoring the château on the estate, saving it from complete ruin at the close of the 19th century.

So much to say about Chateau de Montfaucon and their seminal Lirac that I don't know where to start. Along with Xavier, Montfaucon produces some of my favorite wines coming from the southern Rhone Valley, and this might represent the best value of any wine in that category. I love that they house a plethora of back vintages in their cellar and only release the wine when it's ready to drink. In this case, that patience is rewarded handsomely as ripe, concentrated red fruits flow generously from the glass, balanced by focused acidity, fine grain tannins, and the trademark herbal garrigue that comes with everything surrounding Chateauneuf du Pape. And this drinks very much like a Chateauneuf for half the price. The finesse and length on display here will impress and entice without fail, and having recently had the pleasure of tasting the 2009 and 2010 vintages again, I cannot wait to see how this one develops. Though lacking the in-your-face intensity of the 2017 vintage, it is without question a bottle worthy of buying by the case and revisiting frequently over the course of the next decade.

Another winner from Ch. Montaucon. One of the best Rhone wines that I have tasted this year. A nose of fresh, pure, deep red fruits and baking spices. On the palate, it starts out very dry and then expands quickly with plush red and black fruits. Just the right amount of tannin on the lingering finish. Supple and refined.

The new vintage of the Baron Louis has finally arrived! Like all vintages of this wine the "Baron Louis" is a later released wine. Where most producers are coming to market with their 2021s and 2022s, vigneron Rudi de Pins has always felt that this wine benefits with a few years in bottle before its release. I couldn’t agree more. The 2018 is pure Provencal pleasure with its flavors of cherry, blackcurrant, garrigue, and herbs de Provence permeating the glass. This new release has an elegant and refined texture that is perfect drinking right now. The Baron Louis traditionally ages well even for a decade or more but this new arrival is going to be hard to keep your hands off of!
