K&L Notes

Vigneron Hervé Joyaux Fabre began his career as a Bordeaux merchant but the wines of Argentina began to gain his attention. Falling in love with the category, he purchased his winery in Mendoza and created in Fabre Montmayou in 1992. Gaining much success there it was not until 2015 when Fabre turned his sight back to the birthplace of Malbec, Cahors. Impressed with the diverse terroirs that Cahors had, he gathered a group of investors together and formed Les Vignobles St Didier Parnac. The Chateau du Perry is part of that group and has holdings on both the clay-limetone hillsides and the alluvial terraces just above the Lot River. The wine is made from 100% Malbec that is aged in large oak barrel for 12 months before transferring to concrete tanks to rest before bottling. The wine is rich and concentrated with flavors of dried plum and red berries. This is a great Malbec for now but has plenty of structure to develop for a few more years.

Dear Argentina, did you forget who first grew the grapes that have brought you so much fame? Now days, if you ask anyone about Malbec, you're all they talk about....But me, little old Cahors, I have not forgotten Malbec's French lineage! I have all of the rich plums and enveloping spice that you so dearly love, but I have the one thing that some laud you for lacking - tannin and structure! My Malbec is intense, perfumed, serious, age worthy! Argentina, you are an old reliable friend, but would it kill you to mention me to your fans every once in a while? What a shame to forget the French! Yours truly, Cahors.

We don't see enough French Malbec and that's a problem. There is a ton of really good stuff out there but sometimes the prices don't quite match up with the market. Luckily we found this beauty from Cahors, the Chateau du Perry. Here you have something that gives the impression of that rich ripe fruit you might find in Argentina but with a more classic French sensibility. Cahors is slowly reemerging as a Malbec destination and I think this wine is its perfect ambassador. Flavors of black raspberry, licorice root, sassafras and graphite give way to a rich but structured palate. This is a lot of wine for under $15! Surely fans of Argentine Malbec will be enchanted but you Bordeaux drinkers shouldn't miss this either. It has all the weight and structure you're looking for with some nice fleshy fruit to balance this out. Worthy of case purchases for sure!
