Of all the wines I discovered on my trip to Victoria in June of this year, the Dominique Portet Fontaine might be the best. Ben Portet, the current winemaker, is wine industry royalty. His grandfather helmed Lafite Rosthchild decades, his uncle founded Clos du Val in Napa, and his father was one of the original flying winemakers, a group of Bordeaux winemakers that consulted for wineries across the globe. Despite the fact that the Yarra Valley is principally known for producing Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, its cold and marine-influenced climate is actually highly similar to Bordeaux. In fact, the wineries entire line-up of wines is made exactly the same way as Bordeaux, yielding a wine that has many old-world sensibilities, but superimposed onto bright, ripened, new-world fruit. Even as an entry level wine, I think the Fontaine is one of the best values in Cabernet in the whole store. The nose is all about pure, unadulterated cassis fruit. Aromatically driven, this has well integrated pyrazine character along with an oak profile that stands evenly with the the fruit. Spicy and textured on the palate, with fine tannins and an unexpected whip of acidity that strikes the mid palate. I poured this for our owner and Bordeaux buyer Clyde who remarked, “it’s pretty good,” which is the highest praise I’ve ever heard from him for a wine outside Bordeaux. At $20, you’ll be shocked at how good this wine is.

Your new under-the-radar pick! Minty up front, with eucalyptus notes jumping out of the glass, there is no doubt that Dominique Portet's Fontaine Cabernet Sauvignon hails from Australia. The 2020 release shows off delicious currant and berry fruit and Yarra Valley's cold climate acid, and somehow feels substantial but lifted. This is a light, focused, value-driven stunner with depth. Sneak Fontaine into a dinner party and shock everyone that your food-friendly winner is barely twenty bucks.

The nose of the 2020 Dominique Portet "Fontaine" Cabernet Sauvignon unfolds with layers of complexity and beautiful integration, offering an initial peek of the amazing quality this wine has to offer. Blackberry and black plum aromas part way for an herbal core of eucalyptus and green pepper. The palate perfectly balances the concentration of fruit, herbal tones, and eucalyptus that makes Autralia's Yarra Valley such a special place for Cabernet Sauvignon. This sub-$20 wine easily competes with examples that are two or three times the price from California.
