2020 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage Blanc

Outer quote mark Another heavenly white from this estate is the 2020 Hermitage Blanc, which is the usual 80% Marsanne and 20% Roussanne from a mix lieux-dits. Incredibly perfumed with notes of acacia flowers, buttered stone fruits, toasted brioche, honeysuckle, and crushed stone, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a seamless, layered texture, beautiful mid-palate depth, and a great finish. The purity, balance, and intensity here are just about off the charts, and this beauty deserves a solid decade of bottle age, although you'll be excused if you drink one in its youth as well. Outer quote mark The 2020 vintage is 'an amazing surprise', according to Jean-Louis Chave. 'It's like the vines adapted to the heat of the vintage - so it's full of hope for me.' A tasting of the different lieux-dits confirms that although this is a hot, dry vintage, the whites have a great sense of freshness, balance and vivacity. This doesn't have the same sense of power and extract as the 2017 or 2019; it is slimmer and more precise, will offer a lot of pleasure early on and will age well, too. Outer quote mark Takes your breath away. Showing extraordinary concentration, vivid energy and precision, this is sunny and warm, with a generous core of peach and apple flanked by mineral, smoke, subtle toast and finely crushed salt. Reveals lemon oil and green herbs on the powerful, seemingly endless finish. Incredibly alluring now, this has a long life ahead in the cellar -- for those who can resist. Marsanne and Roussanne. Drink now through 2035. Inner quote mark (11/2023)

Outer quote mark I tasted five different lots that will be blended into the 2020 Hermitage Blanc, from Péléat, l'Ermite and three parts of Les Rocoules. Full-bodied, honeyed and rich, this should be another outstanding vintage for Chave's white, with the incredible lushness of the bigger wines balanced by the zestiness found at the top of Les Rocoules and the delicacy and freshness of L'Ermite. Outer quote mark Cask samples tasted at the domaine. Sample 1: Le Péléat. Rich but precise with plenty of flesh and volume. Sample 2: upper part of Rocoule. Floral aromatics. Rich again but a little more vibrant and vigorous. Sample 3: L’Hermite. More profound with incredible depth and complexity. Sample 4: Rocoule. Vibrant but discreet. Lovely purity and precision. 18.5/20 points (JL) Inner quote mark (12/2021)

K&L Notes

John Livingstone-Learmonth for Cradle of the Rhône: "quite a solid yellow robe; the bouquet involves roast nuts, peach, greengage, lime airs, variety in it, also aniseed, floral, salted white raisin prompts. The palate has a rich intensity, is very thorough, profound, lip smacking, carries a toffee-dried raisin flavour, but also has structure, like a red wine. It’s very grown up, serious, very fine on the finish after the compact richness, the interior solid, some sweet oak present. It’s a very long-term wine. 'This was harvested 29 August, has bel balance, a lot of freshness; you can make a fine wine despite the precocity of the harvest,' J-L Chave. I would be in no hurry here – drink from 2028 plus."
