This super special edition of Laphroaig has a complex nose of caraway seed, sea kelp, iodine, sea salt and malt. As with classic Laphroaig style, there is the ever present peat but, in this case, it is refined and has additional flavors of almost ripe stone fruits, vanilla, white pepper, and baking spices. I had it "neat" and although I am a huge baby about alcohol "heat", I really didn't get any off of this bottling. So, enjoy as is or add just a wee bit of water....not very much!

It's simply a coup that we were able to manage this excellent cask. The 18 year old version for EU sells for over $500. No need to say more. Maybe the slightly lower proof is why they let it go, but that says nothing about the quality. The color is pale gold. The nose is just perfect. That elegant linear old style Laphroaig. The smell of a cool Islay evening, the finest tiger palm, pungent white smoke, camphor, kippers, lemon extract, capers. On the palate, stone fruits in antiseptic solution, smoking peppercorn, ozone - almost electric. This one definitely gets you buzzing. With a bit of water we start to get more fruit and more savory nutty character. More citrus and oyster liquor, sweet herbs, fresh tilled soil and roasted meats. It's an absolute stunner. Truly a thing to behold. Don't let the 48% fool you, this is as massive and intense as any old Laphroaig ever was.

Laphroaig is usually a big and expressive single malt. Age seems to have made this cask more subtle and nuanced but is still has all of the characteristics that lovers of this single malt enjoy. The nose has smoke and then sweet aromas. In the mouth, there are smoke and malt flavors integrated with a touch of elegance. With water, both the nose and mouth open up and become a little more subtle.
