SKU #1670436 97 points Vinous

Outer quote mark The 2018 Giorgio Primo represents a new level of finesse at La Massa. Powerful and dense in the glass, with tremendous structure, Giorgio Primo is a terrific example of how compelling international varieties are in Panzano's Conca d'Oro district. Crème de cassis, spice, new leather, chocolate and sweet spice build into the textured, palate-staining finish. (AG) Inner quote mark (9/2021)

Outer quote mark The Fattoria La Massa 2018 Giorgio Primo is a wine of richness, volume and texture. The blend is 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot, and maceration times last 26 to 28 days to add the lovely depth and creaminess you taste here. Black fruit, crushed stone, truffle essence and toasted spice emerge from the bouquet. The wine's full-bodied structure and its freshness promise a long cellar-aging future. 95 points Decanter

Outer quote mark Intense, aromatic and textured, the 2018 Giorgio Primo features wafts of potpourri, earth, cocoa and petrichor. In the mouth, almost-chewy tannins combine with fresh acidity and a herbal, balsamic edge to support powerful, opulent dark fruits. It's all held in check by limestone verticality, and finishes soft and long. (JB) Inner quote mark (3/2023)

95 points James Suckling

Outer quote mark Gorgeous aromas of blackcurrants and blackberries with hints of crushed stones and walnuts. Full body, firm and chewy tannins with blackberries and hints of chocolate and spice. Flavorful and intense at the end. Better after 2023, but better already very pretty. Inner quote mark (8/2021)

The silkiness on the nose combined with the velvety dark fruit on the palate makes this a stunner wine for those looking for plushness. The tannins are very subtle, the fruit is very up front, layered with savory herbed oils. This is a perfect match for stewed pot roast and roasted root vegetables.

The ubiquitous Super Tuscan is always a difficult concept for me to digest. It can be almost any selection of red grapes but the Giorgio Primo is something special. Gianpaolo Motta, owner and winemaker, went to school in Bordeaux for winemaking and he’s no stranger to Bordeaux varieties even in the hear of Chianti Classico in Panzano. His consulting enologist is Stéphane Derenoncourt perhaps the most influential man in the business now and has helped Gianpaolo in making the Giorgio Primo into one of Tuscany’s best examples of the genre. The 55% Cabernet Sauvigon, 45% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot blend gives this wine a powerful central core yet supple, soft and extraordinarily elegant at the same time. I find balance to be the most important feature in a wine and it is something that not everyone sees, power, over the top aromas and flavors and a texture that Robert Parker used to describe as “oozing” generally take one’s attention away from balance. Balance is also what gives the wine aging potential not excessive tannins. This wine shows the best of Bordeaux-like flavors, cassis and cedar but it is Tuscan first and foremost and Panzano’s climate and terroir (perhaps the best in Chianti Classico) offer something truly special. You can drink this wine now with a bit of decanting or it will age 20+ years. Gianpaolo would suggest the Bistecca Fiorentina as the perfect accompaniment.

Full-bodied, concentrated and well structured, this is a great example of "super Tuscan" wine. It's black fruited with leather and chocolate notes, dark spice, cedar-like undernotes. Powerful wine with ripe tannins and good amount of freshness on the palate. Boysenberry, black plum and wild blackberry flavor with just a hint of sweet black cherry all mingle up nicely on the palate.
