2021 Robert Weil Riesling Trocken

SKU #1649377 91 points James Suckling

Outer quote mark Enticing spring blossom, white peach and Amalfi lemon aromas with a touch of herbal freshness. Elegant and racy with a tight core of wet stone minerality and fine tannins. Very crisp and bright finish. For a basic dry riesling this should age extremely well. Drink or hold. Screw cap. Inner quote mark (8/2022)

Outer quote mark As I mentioned last year, the Riesling Trocken bottling from Weingut Robert Weil is produced from some of the flatter vineyards in the villages of Kiedrich and Eltville owned by the estate. The grapes are fermented and aged in older fuders, with the 2021 version tipping the scales at twelve percent alcohol and carrying 8.4 grams of sugar to buffer acids at 8.2 grams per liter. The wine benefits from a bit of air after opening and eventually offers up a lovely bouquet of tart orange, breadfruit, a complex base of soil tones, lemongrass and a bit of upper register smokiness. On the palate the wine is bright, full-bodied and nicely precise, with a fine core, good mineral drive and cut, snappy acids and lovely balance on the long, complex and focused finish. This is very good basic Riesling Trocken! Inner quote mark (11/2022)

Outer quote mark The 2021 Rheingau Riesling Trocken is clear and fresh but a little bit dull on the nose, as if there were a layer of paper between the fruit and nose. Round and lush on the palate, this is a quite rich and juicy estate Riesling with vibrant mineral acidity and a well-structured, persistent finish. Excellent. 12% stated alcohol. Screw cap. Tasted in July 2022. (SR) Inner quote mark (8/2022)
