K&L Notes

Altosur is 100% estate-grown Malbec. Sophenia was a project that was started by two friends in the late 1990s. They named their new project after their daughters (Sophia and Eugenia). They gambled and acquired property in the up and coming, but at the time yet to be proven, Gualtallary valley. Gualtallary has become one of the most exciting regions in the Argentina today. Its high elevation vineyards with large diurnal shifts and soils with calcium carbonate have elevated the world's perception of Malbec. The winery has great terroir and access to some of the best minds in the world of wine, utilizing consulting winemakers Matias Michelini and Michel Rolland. With all of that going on, it shouldn't surprise anyone how good this wine is. What is surprising is the cost. This is an incredible value that harkens back to when Malbec first came to everyone's attention, but with the benefit of decades of knowledge and innovation in winemaking.

Quelle Surprise! From your lovely boysenberry and kirsch scents to your very pretty palate of red boysenberry, dark cherries, cocoa powder and elegant tannins. The finish is nicely bright and fresh. Even if you are new to Malbec or have been drinking it for years, don't miss out on this one. It may also the change the minds of those of you who pooh-pooh Malbec!

This is a killer value for a great malbec from Argentina. The nose opens with bright red fruits such as maraschino cherry and raspberry, then moves into notes of fresh figs, vanilla, and a slight herbaceous note of sage. The medium-full bodied palate offers soft velvet tannins, balanced acidity, and a lingering juicy finish of black cherry, clove, blackberry, and cassis.

This is a wine for red wine lovers, not just for those of us who love Malbec, or for those of us who are looking for good deals. Classic is an adjective that comes immediately to mind. It has classic Malbec aromas; cherries, blackberries, plums, tobacco, and mellow spice and lifted floral notes. It has a medium to medium-full body. The tannins are present, they are soft and there aren't a lot of them. If you want or need a textbook Malbec, here it is. That being said, this is so much more than that. This is a classic example of Gualtallary terroir speaking through Malbec. There is a brightness, and a focus to it. All those great berry smells would lead you to think that the nose would be heavy, ripe and full. It is ripe, but perfectly ripe, and not heavy. Where it shines is on the palate, there is a real depth of fruit to this. As the wine expands on the palate the flavors start light bright, tart red berries, and then the flavors move to deepers and heavy dark fruits. There is a complexity and energy to this that comes from where the fruit is grown. There is non fruit complexity too, there is a touch of clean tobacco on the nose and a dusty earthiness, that calcareous soil showing through. The wine has length, that dark fruit character builds and is lifted on a clean, easy finish. This is a great everyday or party wine. This would have been a perfect wine to have at a World Cup party, there is still time at the time I am writing this, but that 7AM start makes this more of an afternoon celebration and/or holiday party wine for me. This is a wine of surprising depth and complexity but it is fundamentally a wine to just pull the cork and enjoy.
