This is a wine for red wine lovers, not just for those of us who love Malbec, or for those of us who are looking for good deals. Classic is an adjective that comes immediately to mind. It has classic Malbec aromas; cherries, blackberries, plums, tobacco, and mellow spice and lifted floral notes. It has a medium to medium-full body. The tannins are present, they are soft and there aren't a lot of them. If you want or need a textbook Malbec, here it is. That being said, this is so much more than that. This is a classic example of Gualtallary terroir speaking through Malbec. There is a brightness, and a focus to it. All those great berry smells would lead you to think that the nose would be heavy, ripe and full. It is ripe, but perfectly ripe, and not heavy. Where it shines is on the palate, there is a real depth of fruit to this. As the wine expands on the palate the flavors start light bright, tart red berries, and then the flavors move to deepers and heavy dark fruits. There is a complexity and energy to this that comes from where the fruit is grown. There is non fruit complexity too, there is a touch of clean tobacco on the nose and a dusty earthiness, that calcareous soil showing through. The wine has length, that dark fruit character builds and is lifted on a clean, easy finish. This is a great everyday or party wine. This would have been a perfect wine to have at a World Cup party, there is still time at the time I am writing this, but that 7AM start makes this more of an afternoon celebration and/or holiday party wine for me. This is a wine of surprising depth and complexity but it is fundamentally a wine to just pull the cork and enjoy.
