Just across the Rhône river from the esteemed vineyards of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, this 88-acre estate is owned and operated by Rodolphe de Pins, a UC Davis graduate and former member of the winemaking staff at Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe. Montfaucon crafts their Côtes-du-Rhône to express the intense fruit characteristics of the appellation, blending to achieve harmony and balance.

Wow, just when I thought beloved Direct Import Montfaucon couldn't get any better, they release this sophisticated Rhône gem. Lovely violet aromatics give way to bright berry fruit through the palate, followed by a rich finish. It's a classically bold style that still feels nimble, with enough crowd-pleasing versatility to pair with almost anything. We've long been recommending this producer in our Hollywood store (in fact, it was a fellow staff member who turned me on to La Côte), and I'm thrilled to welcome the elegant 2019 into the fold.

This perennial K&L favorite got a slight upgrade this vintage. More rigorous fruit selection defines the new "La Cote" label. You still will find flavors of raspberry, fennel, mocha and spicebox here but with just a touch more richness followed by a Montfaucon's classic finessed finish.

- When it comes to wine, France stands alone. No other country can beat it in terms of quality and diversity. And while many of its Region, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne most obviously, produce wine as rare, as sought-after and nearly as expensive as gold, there are just as many obscurities and values to be had from little known appellations throughout the country. To learn everything there is to know about French wine would take a lifetime. To understand and appreciate French wine, one only has to begin tasting them.

Rhone

- Legendary wine-producing region in southeast France. Stereotypically speaking, Rhone wines are high in alcohol, and the majority produced is red. The northern Rhone is best known for outstanding 100% Syrah wines from areas such as Cote Rotie and Hermitage, as well as for fabulous white wines from Condrieu (where Viognier is king). In the southern Rhone, look for spicy, full-bodied wines that are blends of Grenache, Syrah, and other varietals coming from appellations such as Chateauneuf du Pape, Gigondas, or Rasteau. Wines labeled as Cote du Rhone or Cotes du Rhone Village (a cut above generic Cotes du Rhone) are frequently found here in the US because they often represent some of the best values on the market.
