2020 Domaine de la Bégude Bandol Rouge (Previously $35)

SKU #1644863 Jancis Robinson

Outer quote mark Certified AB and Ecocert organic. Mourvèdre and Grenache from vineyards on clay-limestone at 410 m asl. Oak spices, ice-cold peppermint and blackberries. The wine started very oaky, but relaxed more and more over three days, the purity of the fruit pulling forward ahead of the oak. Wonderful striations of dried thyme embedded into the dark succulence of the fruit. Masses of ultra-fine tannins, almost invisibly meshing the wine together. (TC) Inner quote mark (12/2022)

K&L Notes

Guillaume and Soledad Tari run this beautiful estate in the elevated seaside appellation of Bandol. Bandol is an incredible micro-climate with its concave-shaped vineyards that gain the exposure of the sun and the cooling effects of the seaside breezes, all while making powerfully rich Mourvedre-based wines that evolve beautifully over the years. The Bandol is a blend of 65% Mourvedre, 25% Grenache, and 10% Cinsault with an average vine age of 25 years. Just starting to develop, the Begude offers up deep black-fruited flavors accompanied by notes of anise and spices. Give this a good decant for an hour or so and then serve with grilled lamb or tagines of slow-cooked meats with African spices.

Domaine de la Begude has skyrocketed to the top of the Bandol charts. Their clean and precise style is all about the study of Mourvedre. From one of the highest altitude estates in the appellation, they continually make wines that have a sense of place and varietal character. Mostly Mourvedre, this savory wine has notes of brambly black fruit, crushed fennel seed, new shoe leather, lavender and white pepper. No new wood here as the wines are aged in large format wood. Stockinger barrels, some of the best in the business. The wine opens with polished tannins and unfolds for hours, maybe even days! Decant it for an hour or more before serving if you can and drink it with some grilled prime steaks, bone-in pork chops or garlicky sausages. You'll thank me later.
