2010 Auchroisk 11 Year Old "Old Malt Cask" K&L Exclusive Single First Fill ex-Bourbon Barrel Finished Cask Strength Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml)

SKU #1636971

The wonderful Auchroisk distillery is one of Speyside's truly unsung heroes. Often filled into subpar casks, intended only for blending, its unique character can still shine through even when the wood is lacking. Add a great, high-quality barrel and you've got a recipe for a gem. The fact that it's so affordable shouldn't scare off the more discerning malt nuts out there. We're the lucky beneficiaries of some outstanding relationships in Scotland, which has afforded us unparalleled access and pricing in the market. The Auchroisk distillery is relatively young in Scottish terms, built to bolster the stocks of the famous J&B Blended Scotch, along with their other stalwart malts - Knockando, Glen Spey and Strathmill. Based near Mulbern, the single-malt brand was not used initially, instead opting to use "The Singleton" name, presumably due to the difficult pronunciation. It should be said, "Ah-Thrusk!" Meaning the shallow burn beyond the red stream, it's remarkable how much meaning can be packed into so few syllables. Likewise, it's a shock they've been able to pack so much flavor into this humble little bottle. It was originally distilled and filled into a third fill sherry butt in 2010 before being transferred to a freshly dumped bourbon barrel in the middle of 2020. Bottled at cask strength of 56.6% abv without chillfiltration or coloring of any kind.

This is definitely one of the more unusual preparations we've seen to date. Drawn from a single refill sherry butt and filled for over a year into a fresh first fill bourbon barrel, the result is one of the most balanced and complete single casks in our portfolio today. The color is pale gold. The first thing you get on the nose is that fresh bourbon barrel, an inviting start. Next a huge bouquet of yellow and white flowers, but not overly perfumed. More air in the glass equals more fruit, now really ripe gorgeous Williams pear, candied ginger and lemon peel. Very forward on the lemon candies on the palate, barley syrup, fresh herbs and tons of citrus oils. With water, just more of everything. Not huge changes after dilution, but a fabulous vibrant character that sticks throughout. This is one of the best values for someone who isn't looking for a particular style over an another and just wants great stuff to drink..

What a gem of a cask. The original, albeit subtle, sherry influence provides a little more weight and heft than you'd expect to see, but the racking into a Bourbon barrel for finishing really stamps its influence on the malt. The end result is a surprisingly dark 11 year old 'from a Bourbon barrel.' Aromatically it's got a ton of citrus and vanilla with a bit of background nuttiness and raw honey. The flavors on the palate range from caramelized citrus fruits and candied lemon peel to roasted almonds, dried dates, malt and milk chocolate. For as sweet as the nose and palate are, the finish is surprisingly dry, like the first breath of air when you step into a sauna, tinged with wood and very pleasant. Bottled at 56.6% ABV it sweetens up considerably with a small addition of water.
