Cafayate is a brand and a place. Salta is the larger appellation and the name of the largest city in the region. It is 800 miles North of Mendoza, and it is at the same latitude as Rio de Janeiro. The only reason that viticulture can occur here is because of the elevation. The lowest vineyards start at a mile above sea level. These vines grow in the Andes, not in the pre-alpine foothills of Mendoza. The climate is high desert, with plenty of sunshine that is countered by cold desert nights, not to mention the. Bodegas Etchart, who makes this wine, was one of the first wineries in the region dating back to 1850. Being so isolated there is a greater appreciation for the region so every part of their business is done in a sustainable manner. The wines have an intensity and a freshness that speaks to the challenges of growing in this mountainous region.
