Hello Liquid silk!
Ata Rangi 2018 Pinot Noir has beautiful aromas of wild lavender bouquet and freshly picked blackberries. Medium gentle body which is full of flavors, combined with acidity on the back palate, makes this wine a perfect pair with almost anything. I paired it with saffron roasted chicken breast and it was simply heavenly.

It’s been nearly six months, but the next vintage of New Zealand’s best Pinot Noir has finally arrived! Founded in 1979 by Clive Patton, Ata Rangi is one of the pioneering producers of Martinborough and considered the absolute best of New Zealand Pinot Noir. Named “Tipuranga Teitei o Aoteroa” or “Grand Cru of New Zealand” in 2010, Ata Rangi and New Zealand’s other premiere producer, Felton Road, are the only two producers to have achieved this huge accolade. Made from the oldest vines from their organically farmed vineyards, nearly 70% is planted to Abel Clone, a New Zealand suitcase clone that was smuggled into the country from DRC. The 2018 rendition of Ata Rangi is exquisite. This is a dark, powerful and complex Pinot Noir with notes of black cherry, cedar and forest floor above a built and structured palate. Excellent now, this will dramatically improve with 5-10 years of cellaring. Whether you have a soft spot for New Zealand, or just love outstanding quality Pinot Noir, Ata Rangi is a global benchmark you can’t miss.

Just excellent! That's all that I can say. A wonderful Pinot with full and rich red fruits, deep and dark cherries, ripe strawberry. Muted spices add to the pleasure and plush mouthfeel adds to the experience. The acidity on the finish adds brightness and the supple tannin finishes the job nicely. This is the closest to Burgundy that I have tasted outside of that region. Well done!

A stunning Pinot Noir from Martinborough! This wine is made from old vines from Ata Rangi's vineyards with about a third of the fruit fermenting whole cluster. It's aged in about a third of new French oak which is integrated beautifully in the wine. The nose is very aromatic with floral, red fruit and spice notes. The palate is just as generous with complex flavors of berries, spices and earth. Super balanced with a long life ahead of it.

Probably the finest Pinot Noir produced in the southern hemisphere. Ata Rangi's old vines on the Martinborough terrace produce one of the most profound renditions of this grape you'll ever find regardless of how deep your pockets are. This is world-class by any measure. Purple flowers on the nose mix with Asian spices, Agar wood, piquant forest berries, black raspberry, freshly turned earth, and leaf litter. Mouth filling and flavorful, but also refined and elegant in its presentation. The texture is like satin, the acidity fresh and vibrant. It's the complete package, not a molecule out of place. Any collector of great Pinot Noir should have Ata Rangi in their cellar.

As a fan of New Zealand Pinot Noir, it is always a pleasure to try a new vintage of the Ata Rangi. While Central Otago gets most of the recognition for producing the country's best Pinots, Martinborough, an hour's drive from Wellington, is also a source for some outstanding wines. Ata Rangi is known as being one of the pioneers in the region, with the first vineyard plantings in 1979. This wine delivers everything you desire in a Pinot Noir. It opens with a very pretty nose that is dark and rich, loads of spices such as cloves and nutmeg, and a subtle touch of wood in the background. Flavors of cranberries, strawberries, and wild roses are lifted by the freshness and ample acidity that makes Pinot Noir such a fantastic grape. This all leads to a finish that is long with some fine dusty tannins. Definitely something that could age effortlessly for several years and provide plenty of drinking pleasure now or later. The 2018 Ata Rangi is yet another classic from this producer that shows just what New Zealand can do, rivaling the best Pinot Noir grown anywhere in the world.

Alta Rangi Pinot Noir is one of two wineries to be awarded the inaugural Tipuranga Teitei o Aotearoa or Grand Cru of New Zealand. You get oak, blackberry, medium plus acidity, mushroom, cherry, and cloves with savory undertones and a long finish. This pinot is a great value, great price, and definitely worth the try!
