A very spicy, stony and fragrant nose with a wealth of lemons, white peaches and lemon blossom. Super clean and flinty. The palate has a smooth delivery of essence-like citrus fruit in the yellow-to-orange spectrum. Breathtakingly elegant and fine. Drink now or hold.

The bright-colored 2018 Schloss Johannisberger Riesling Auslese Rosalack is very clear, fine and bright on the fabulous, floral and so delicate nose, which reflects the terroir more than anything else. Based on nearly botrytis-free grapes, this is a lush and piquant, stimulating, mineral, concentrated and highly refined Auslese with vivacious acidity, very precise and well-defined fruit and a long and seamless finish. Entirely fermented in stainless steel. 1,200 liters were bottled with 7.5% alcohol and 110.8 grams of residual sugar. Tasted from AP 09 19 in August 2019. (SR)

Vinous
This latest Rosagold bottling evokes quince and white peach jellies on the nose and the creamy, ultra-light palate. A hint of white truffle points to subtle presence of noble rot; suggestions of Normandy cider add a delightfully ethereal aura perfectly suited to the wine’s delicacy; and an emergence of grapefruit on the lusciously lingering finish serves for animating juiciness. I find this alluring effort – of which there is an impressive 1,800 liters – quite consistent with the corresponding Spätlese, but I miss the latter’s floral and mineral dimensions. In contrast with what I thought was needless self-criticism concerning his 2018 Spätlese, Doktor said he’s especially proud of this Auslese “in the not too flamboyant [überladene] style that I am targeting.” (DS)
