2019 Walter Scott "Cuvée Anne" Eola-Amity Hills Chardonnay

SKU #1586160 97 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark The 2019 Chardonnay Cuvée Anne comes from several vineyards, including X Novo, Justice and Seven Springs, and matured in about 45% new wood. It has alluring scents of preserved lemon, saline and graphite, with perfumed white orchard fruits. The palate is linear and pure, with a satiny texture and gentle nutty character at this early stage. Its elevated length and purity suggest this has much more to offer with additional time in bottle. 94 points Decanter

Outer quote mark Cuvee Anne now uses only Eola-Amity Hills fruit from a variety of vineyards. Pahlow aggressively thinned shoot to reduce yield and picked early. The wine is aged for a year in barrel followed by an additional 4 - 5 months in tank. The result is lemony and very fine, with a reductive, smoky element, a pronounced saline edge, and yet enough passionfruit and floral aroma to fill the wine out nicely. The wine is laser-focused, but not lacking depth, and it should age exceptionally well. (CC) Inner quote mark (7/2021)

Outer quote mark Ken Pahlow typically blends this wine from sources throughout the Willamette Valley; in 2019, he limited the fruit to the Eola Hills. It’s classic Walter Scott chardonnay in most ways—smoky, flinty, redolent of nutty lees and matchstick sharpness. The palate is lean and lovely, the golden apple in the attack starts off rich only to gain tartness in the middle, so that the finish feels cinched, like a waistline stitch. Impressive. Clear and precise, the 2019 Walter Scott 'Cuvee Anne' Chardonnay opens with notes of noble reduction: struck flint and matchstick. Give the wine some air and those reductive notes transition into steely aromas of graphite, rock salt, and oyster shell, with white peach, orange zest, honeysuckle, and orange blossom adding layers of complexity. The wine's structure is focused and linear, with fresh acidity striking upon first sip and pulling the flavors through the finish. An excellent example of how great Oregon Chardonnay can be.

The Cuvee Anne has higher lift on the palate and a delightful tanginess. I love the tart lemon citrus, kiwi, apricot, slightly brininess and delectable celery salt, seaweed like minerality this cuvee has. This is for the fatty fish, butter poached chicken and fresh crab enjoyers.

This cuvee offers exceptional value and great insight into the upper tier Walter Scott wines. Sourced from A+ vineyards (Justice, X Novo, Seven Springs,) this bottling shows the very Burgundian style of these wines. Low crop loads in the vineyards mean very concentrated flavors, grapes are picked preserving bright, fresh acidity. Wild yeast fermentation brings out a complex struck-flint, matchstick, reductive edge, with mouth watering citrus fruit, salted lime, grapefruit, tart quince, toasted grains, raw almond and subtle fine grained oak. A vibrant, focused, linear wine early on its ascent, and destined to be great. An Oregon Chardonnay masterclass you don't want to miss.
