2019 Domaine Lafage "Cuvée Nicolas" Grenache Côtes Catalanes Vieilles Vignes

SKU #1585134 95 points Jeb Dunnuck

Outer quote mark All Grenache brought up in demi–muids and aged on lees for 8 months, the medium ruby/purple hued color of the 2019 Cuvée Nicolas is followed by a killer bouquet of kirsch liqueur, savory spices, cured meats, and peppery garrigue. Rich, medium to full-bodied, and gorgeously textured, it has wonderful richness with no sensation of weight or heaviness. It’s another insane value from this team. Inner quote mark (3/2021)

K&L Notes

Jean-Marc Lafage has knocked it out of the park once again with this high-quality, low-cost stunner of a wine. Domaine Lafage is housed in his facility just outside the city of Perpignan. One of the most advanced wineries in the region, Jean-Marc and his wife Elaine use a range of sites gathering some of the best fruit in the Roussillon. For over a decade they have crafted many of the "must buy" wines from the region. The Cuvée Nicolas is named for Jean-Marc and Eliane's son. It is sourced from 65-plus-year-old Grenache vines from two main soils, the red schist in the foothills of the Pyrenees and the black schist from the village of Maury. All grapes are hand harvested and then fermented in large tank. Aging is in a mix of concrete and large oak barrels. This Grenache has incredible purity reflecting the rich red and black fruit flavors that this warm wine growing region produces. Another tremendous buy from the Lafages. *Practicing Organic*

What can I say about the wines of Jean-Marc and Eliane Lafage that I haven't already said a million times before. Bastide Miraflors, Novellum, the new La Colline Aux Fossiles and now, the new vintage of the Cuvee Nicolas. Every wine the Lafages touch, blows the quality-to-price-ratio out of the water! The Nicolas is all old-vine Grenache that is rich and concentrated, especially reflecting the warm confiture of fruit flavors you get from this grape when it comes from Maury. The vines grown on red schist soils from the foothills in the Pyranees provides more structure. Not quite hedonistic, the Nicolas has lift and vigor that keeps it dancing lithely on the palate. You'd have to go to the Rhone and spend twice as much to find a Grenache that offers this level of intensity and depth. Yet another MUST BUY from Domaine Lafage!
