Outer quote mark 95+ Points "The explosive nose of the 2017 Pegaso Barrancos de Pizarra is all thyme and flowers, really expressive, aromatic and redolent of the herbs found in the surroundings of the Gredos Mountains. It's especially representative of the Mediterranean character of the year. It has powerful aromatics that keep growing in the glass, floral and spicy, with notes that are reminiscent of curry, nutmeg and Jamaica pepper. It's very showy and intoxicating, with the tight tannins of the slate soils—they are chalky and finer grained than the slightly coarser tannins from granite. I am really impressed by this 2017, which is as good or better than the 2016. Bravo! 2,800 bottles were filled in July 2018." (LG) Inner quote mark (7/2020)

K&L Notes

This is Telmo Rodriguez’s Sierra de Gredos project, named after the Spanish car manufacturer. Take a quick minute, or two, and check them out on the web, you can see where the inspiration came from. The Sierra de Gredos are the mountains west of Madrid. This region was all but forgotten and the wines that were being made were done in bulk. Telmo saw the potential, and could help himself and started making wine here. The main varietal is Garnacha, the soils are primarily granite and as the name suggests they are at elevation in the mountains. The Pizarra vineyards are found on metamorphic, brown slate soils, which are unique to the village of Cebreros, within the Sierra de Gredos. Pizarra soil is found at an altitude above 950 meters, up to 1,200 meters, mainly with an eastern orientation. The wines from here have a unique expression: they are always fresh, complex, direct, and profound. Pizarra vineyards include Arrebatacapas, La Redonda, and La Curva. Very old traditional garnacha bush vines are manually harvested and spontaneously fermented in foudre, followed by an extended élevage of 24 to 30 months in 400 and 500-liter French oak barrels. Barrancos de Pizarra is produced in small amounts and is released when deemed ready.
