The 2014 Doctor Spätlese, which was also still in cask, was a bit more willing to be tasted than the Kabinett, but this too is still a puppy and its best years will be well in the future. The beautiful nose wafts from the glass in a blend of pear, delicious apple, a touch of petrol, lovely wild yeast tones, bee pollen, a deep base of Doctor soil and a topnote of white flowers. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, pure and very elegant, with a rock solid core, fine focus and cut and a very long, reserved and classy finish. This will be a classic in the fullness of time, but expect it to be typically chunky and unforgiving in its early days. (Drink between 2022-2055)

The 2014 Berncasteler Doctor Riesling Spätlese is clear and concentrated on both nose and palate, and comes along as a highly elegant, piquant and persistently mineral and salty Riesling with great terroir expression and an endless finish. This is a great and flinty Spätlese with 7.5% alcohol that would be worth a Goldkapsel (Gold Capsule). Bottled with 7.5% alcohol, it's perfectly balanced and full of tension and delicacy. (SR)

Vinous
Very ripe pear and honeydew melon are laced with crème de cassis, elder flower and decadent lily in a heady, head-turning aromatic display. A creamy, expansive, richly and ripely fruited but not heavy or overly sweet palate impression leads to a long finish that delivers an unexpected, welcome squirt of fresh lime and a crunch of cucumber, complementing the wine’s ravishing liquid florality and luscious ripeness. Smoky, nutty and rich, this is a robust Spätlese that matches its sweet peach jam flavors with pumpkin-like savory notes. The acidity carries all that weight with ease, the wine lasting long and ending clean. It’s a fine excuse to splurge on a duck to roast for dinner.

Savory saffron and pollen notes juxtapose pure, luscious apricot and tangerine in this laser-edged spätlese. Its juicy, sweet-tart flavors are piercing but the texture is dancingly delicate. While delightfully youthful now, it's structured enough to deepen its mineral complexities through at least 2025. (AI)

Powerfully juicy, with ripe apple and baked peach flavors that carry some rich tropical fruit notes. Minerally and lush, with a finish that offers sage honey and fennel accents. Drink now through 2024.

K&L Notes
91pts Mosel Fine Wines: "AP: 07 15. There is quite some richness and complexity at play on the nose as scents of apricot, mango and honeyed fruits as well as a whiff of volatile emerge from the glass. The wine is creamy, comparatively soft and ripe on the palate with superb juicy exotic fruits adding to the Auslese character of this wine. As so often with Doctor wines, also this wine will need quite some time to develop and integrate aromatically. Patience will be needed to enjoy this beauty. 2024-2044." (10/2015)
