The 2015 Chateauneuf du Pape Les Saintes Vierges is the most flattering of Santa Duc's current releases, offering lushness and generosity on the palate, notes of cherries and licorice, creamy-supple tannins and a mouthwatering finish. It's a blend of Grenache, Mourvèdre and Counoise.
Gigondas-based Yves Gras has quietly grown his holdings in Châteauneuf du Pape to six hectares, from which he's producing four separate cuvées. I'm sure it will hurt some feelings to say an outsider like Gras is producing some of the most compelling examples of Châteauneuf du Pape, but keep in mind these are generally tiny-production gems and not easy to track down. This has a supple and succulent feel with ripe tannins. The nose has dried red flowers and really speaks to the grenache in a mellow mode. Fluid, gently grainy tannins and a silky, chalky finish. Drink now.

(aged in foudres for 18 months) Dark ruby. Ripe, spice-accented blackberry, cherry and succulent herbs on the expansive nose. Intense red and dark berry preserve and spicecake flavors are lifted and sharpened by smoky minerality and pick up a peppery quality with aeration. Concentrated as well as energetic, finishing with impressive persistence, supple tannins and lingering notes of candied lavender and white pepper. (JR)

The 2015 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Les Saintes Vierges is slightly darker in color and checks in as 90% Grenache, 9% Mourvèdre and the balance Counoise, all from the sandy soils of the Les Saintes Vierges lieu-dit, that was destemmed and aged in foudre. Strawberries, plums, mint, and incense notes all flow to a medium to full-bodied, ripe, pretty 2015 that has good acidity. Given its balance and purity, it’s going to drink nicely for 10-15 years.
