Outer quote mark Always the most elegant of the single vineyard releases, the 2006 Gigondas Le Poste is almost all Grenache and comes from a steep, terraced vineyard located just beside the estate. Reminding me of a beautifully mature red Burgundy with its sweet cherry and currants fruits, spice-box, forest floor, camphor and dried flowers, it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, silky tannin, a great mid-palate and no shortage of length on the finish. Impressively energetic aromas of dark berry preserves, smoked meat and minerals, complicated by anise and cracked pepper. Brighter red fruits join the dark berries on the palate, which is strikingly expressive and gently sweet. The minerals linger on the tangy, focused, very long finish. This deserves patience. - Legendary wine-producing region in southeast France. Stereotypically speaking, Rhone wines are high in alcohol, and the majority produced is red. The northern Rhone is best known for outstanding 100% Syrah wines from areas such as Cote Rotie and Hermitage, as well as for fabulous white wines from Condrieu (where Viognier is king). In the southern Rhone, look for spicy, full-bodied wines that are blends of Grenache, Syrah, and other varietals coming from appellations such as Chateauneuf du Pape, Gigondas, or Rasteau. Wines labeled as Cote du Rhone or Cotes du Rhone Village (a cut above generic Cotes du Rhone) are frequently found here in the US because they often represent some of the best values on the market.
