There are few wines that I’ve tasted in recent months that have just stopped me in my tracks like the 2015 Petrolo Boggia C. For Sangiovese, I found this to be incredibly distinctive: this isn’t Brunello, this isn’t Chianti, this is a whole different beast. There’s this unique dichotomy in its aromatic expression that shows both floral, delicate elements and somehow a massive, underlying power. Forest floor, game, sweet, ripened cherries, stone fruit blossom--I could keep going, but it doesn’t quite do it justice. With a taste, the wine comes in big and full, touching every corner of the palate, but without any sense of viscosity or overbearing weight. Somehow this is beautifully lifted with just a hint of tannin that sizzles through the finish. Wow. Outstanding, unique, complex; this is phenomenal.
