2011 Pedro Martinez Alesanco Gran Reserva Rioja

SKU #1559364

Based in the Southern Rioja Alta village of Badarán, Martínez Alesanco is a bodega producing expressive, regionally specific wines at very reasonable prices. They are entirely self reliant in grapes, all of which are grown in their home village of Badarán, one of the coldest zones of Rioja Alta. The vineyards are closer to the Sierra de la Demanda mountains, a range whose elevation and snow-covered peaks are even more dramatic than the Sierra Cantabria range to the north. Sourced from vineyards that are over 50 years old. This is 90% Tempranillo and 10% Garnacha. It is aged for 3 years in a mix of American and French oak barrels. 93 points, Tim Atkin MW: "Vineyards planted in 1941 and 1945 supply the grapes for this new French oak-aged blend of Tempranillo and 40% Garnacha, which is developing some attractive bottle-aged complexity: sweet, balsamic and savory, with well-integrated mocha wood and textured, supple tannins."
