1997 Hector Macbeth 23 Year Old "Hepburn's Choice" K&L Exclusive Single Barrel Cask Strength Speyside Blended Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml)

SKU #1558899

We've had a consistent run of excellent casks under the Hector Macbeth brand over the last few years. This lot of '97 teaspooned hogsheads have been exceptional throughout the years. Many people loved last year's expression which had spent over three years in an old sherry barrel, but others missed the purity and malty complexity of the unadulterated that we'd bottled each of the previous two campaigns. Those whiskies, sold to the bottler without brand name, were all distilled in February of 1997 and declassified by the distiller to be sold off to blenders. The Scotch industry is full of these unusual quirks, and part of the industry's charms are the complicated relationships between various distillers, blenders, and bottlers. In the end, even great brands and distilleries need the occasional infusion of cash that these arrangements offer them. That's why they're willing to sell off tankers of their prized spirit under a different name, but we don't really care what it's called or that it's listed as Blended Malt. All that matters to us is that it's absolutely delicious. Expect a similar profile to previous casks in this lot, but here with more depth and richness. On the nose, orchard fruit, sweet malt, honeysuckle, and pink peppercorn. Delicious and complex palate with vivid, delineated fruit that seems to be a hallmark of these gorgeous Speysiders.

We can't say much about the source for this excellent single cask, but it does come from one of Speyside's very finest distillers. Teaspooned at birth to remove it from the single malt category, this cask is, in all estimations, of similar quality to any single malt. We've done a series of these over the years, and they never fail to offer exceptional quality for your dollar. The color is deep gold. The nose is a bouquet of wild herbs, fresh grated nutmeg, ripe pear skin, and vanilla beans. With two drops of water a gorgeous minerality comes through and a bit of citrus oil. Some almond butter and sweet barley tea as well. On the palate, juicy and unctuous. Gorgeous, malt-driven flavors of fresh biscuits, angel food cake, white currants, crabapple, lemon peel, and fresh fennel. A distinct peppermint thing seems to complete the recipe. This is just a total joy to drink. Something like this does need some attention and the longer you can keep it in your glass the better, or you'll just end up pouring another.
