2014 Sky Mount Veeder Zinfandel (Elsewhere $40)

SKU #1557880 92 points John Gilman

Outer quote mark As I have written in the past, I adore Lore Olds’ beautiful Zinfandel bottlings from his Sky Vineyards, located up above Mayacamas on the top of Mount Veeder. The vineyards are farmed organically, the winery is powered by a single solar panel and the wine is raised in barrels that range from one to ten years of age. The 2014 Zinfandel is the current release from this iconic producer, coming in at an even fourteen percent octane and offering up a beautifully refined and complex nose of black raspberries, dried eucalyptus, spit-roasted venison, pepper, lavender, stony soil tones, bonfire and the first vestiges of autumnal shadings. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied, focused and complex, with a fine core of fruit, excellent mineral drive and grip, still some chewy tannins and a long, tangy and very well-balanced finish. This is properly old school mountain Zinfandel and is still fairly youthful, but all constituent components are in place for an outstanding bottle of wine once the tannins have softened up further. 92+ Inner quote mark (3/2021)

K&L Notes

Planted in rugged, red, rocky, volcanic soils some 2,100ft up Mount Veeder, Sky Vineyards is a breathtaking place. After working at Mayacamas and Beaulieu Vineyards, Sky Vineyards founder, Lore Olds, purchased this remote piece of land in 1973 and has been hand-crafting unique and complex wines every since. The vines are tended with organic and biodynamic principles. The fruit is crushed in a tiny, 100-year-old wooden basket press and raised in entirely old, neutral French oak. The resulting wines are singular in character with a stunning mix of wild spicy fruit, wonderful earthy tones and structures that will see them cellar for many decades to come. The 2014 vintage was very strong for Zinfandel, and wines made like this one are just coming into their drinking window rather than finishing it out. A soil-driven profile with wild purple berries, kirsch, pepper, and sage abound here with a fresh and taut structure of bright acid and dusty tannins. This is a throwback to the historical California table wine style rather than anything remotely jammy or a "barbecue" wine.
