2018 Domaine Jean-Paul & Benoît Droin Chablis Grand Cru "Les Clos"

SKU #1556674 95 points Decanter

Outer quote mark The Droins use 50% new oak on this brilliant expression of the Chablis' most famous Grand Cru, but the wine has more than enough structure to absorb it. Made with fruit from three different parcels, it's a very complete expression of the terroir, with plenty of power and muscularity, toasty wood, leesy richness and a backbone of stony minerality. Drinking Window 2021 - 2030. (TA) Inner quote mark (7/2019)

94-95 points James Suckling

Outer quote mark There’s such richness from the very first impression with all manner of peaches and nectarines, as well as mangoes. Smooth, peach brulée and lemon curd. Some hazelnuts, too. The palate has a super fleshy feel, very plush, very seductive and a very long, full finish. Late, mineral stream here. Drink on release or hold. This will be best at 15+ years. 93-95 points Vinous

Outer quote mark The 2018 Chablis Les Clos Grand Cru is a dense, spherical wine built on power and texture. Lemon confit, apricot, marzipan, dried flowers, chamomile all build as this creamy, voluptuous Chablis shows off its vivid personality. Bright saline notes cut through all the richness, giving the wine energy and a sense of crystalline beauty that is not easy to express with words. Today, I find the 2018 just a bit closed. I won't be surprised if it is even better from bottle. (AG) Inner quote mark (1/2020)

92-95 points Allen Meadows - Burghound

Outer quote mark Here too there is a discreet but still discernible dollop of wood surrounding the airy citrus, oyster shell and sea breeze-scented nose. The racy, intense and intensely mineral-driven flavors possess excellent delineation in the context of the vintage before concluding in a powerful yet refined, focused and strikingly long finish. This too is really quite impressive. *BUrghound Don't Miss!* Inner quote mark (8/2020)

K&L Notes

93-95pts Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy: "Clear bright colour. The nose is very powerful without losing balance. White fruit and spice, though much more of the former. Indeed the fruit stays white all the way through and is exceptionally persistent and succulent at the end. The heady style is manageable here. Beautiful finish Tasted: May 2019." 92pts Neal Martin writing for Vinous: "The 2018 Chablis Les Clos Grand Cru is conspicuously ripe and generous on the nose, not complex as a Les Clos firing on all cylinders can be, though still pretty, featuring pressed white flowers, apricot and touches of Chinese white tea. The palate is full and voluminous, as one would expect of Les Clos, though it does not possess the tension of the top vintages that I have tasted from Droin. The growing season hold sway over the terroir in this vintage, though I strongly suspect it will express more personality with another 18–24 months in bottle. At the moment, the Valmur is showing greater potential."
