2019 Le Clos du Caillou "Les Quartz" Châteauneuf-du-Pape

SKU #1555941 97 points Jeb Dunnuck

Outer quote mark Moving to the tiny production 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Les Quartz, which is mostly Grenache with around 25% or so of Syrah, it has a rich, full-bodied, dense, and almost backward style to go with powerful black fruits, ground pepper, and violet aromas and flavors. I love its purity of fruit, and it builds nicely with time in the glass, showing more mid-palate depth as well as ripe tannins. It’s a stunning bottle of wine, but patience will be required. Hide bottles for 4-5 years and enjoy over the following two decades. 97+ Inner quote mark (11/2021)

94-97 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark Black cherries and dark chocolate swirl together on the nose of the 2019 Chateauneuf du Pape Les Quartz, which somehow manages to retain a mouthwatering sense of freshness on the finish despite the massive ripeness. Full-bodied, richly velvety in feel and expansive in the mouth, this is an impressive effort that's sure to please when young. (JC) Inner quote mark (9/2020)

96 points Decanter

Outer quote mark Deep liquorice and tarragon freshness here, this has a voluptuous texture, very rounded and generous. Ends firms and powerful, it's a wine with plenty of presence and has squished blackberry fruits into the long length. Very well balanced for a powerful wine. Grown half on large pebbles, half on sand in lieu-dit Les Cassanets, destemmed, then fermented mostly in concrete, then matured mostly in demi-muid except for 10% in amphora. 95 points Vinous

Outer quote mark Heady, finely detailed aromas of mineral-tinged red/blue fruit preserves, incense and garrigue are complemented by a suave floral topnote. Alluringly sweet and seamless on the palate, offering impressively concentrated raspberry, boysenberry, spicecake and candied licorice flavors braced by a core of juicy acidity. Finishes with outstanding clarity, polished tannins and floral-driven persistence, leaving an exotic hint of five-spice powder behind. (JR) Inner quote mark (10/2021)

Jancis Robinson

Outer quote mark Fleshy nose and ripe fruit – sweet fruit. Quite rich in style but has an underbelly of charred oak that dominates at the moment. Clean and pure. Needs time. 17++/20 points (AC) Inner quote mark (10/2020)

My first taste of the Les Quartz cuvee was the 1998 vintage. It was an epic vintage for Chateauneuf-du-pape if there ever was one and this was one of my favorites. I've kept my eyes on this wine ever since. The 2019 vintage carries the torch. This is as complete a CdP as you'll come across. It's supremely well built, mostly for age, but can be approached with a patient decant. This is a great example of what best-in-class tastes like.

As expected, this vibrant Chateauneuf ascends to the top-of-the-class on first sip. It is a bold and expressive version replete with flavors of black cherry, allspice, violets and licorice. Gorgeous balancing acidity and fine tannins keep it all focused and promise more than a decade of drinking. This sits with the cream-of-the-crop, from Beaucastel, to Clos des Papes and even Caillou's own coveted "Reserve" bottling.
